How our Admission Lottery will work

On April 17th Lefferts Gardens Charter School will hold its annual lottery drawing at the school, located at 601 Parkside Avenue, between Bedford & Rogers Avenues. The Process will begin at 6:00 pm. Student applicants and their families are welcome to attend. Your presence at the lottery is NOT required for your child to be selected in the lottery.

Prior to the Lottery

Lefferts Gardens Charter School has made a determination of each student’s residence being In-District or Out-of-District, based on our check of home addresses provided on each application. In-District means that your family’s home address is listed in District 17, the district for LGCS. If our determination appears incorrect, the applicant must contact us by mail or e-mail (see contact details on page 2) by May 1, 2013.

On Lottery Day

All applications that were received by April 2, 2013will be included in the lottery. Lottery numbers will be assigned first to In-District Applicants and second to Out-of-District Applicants. Seats will be offered in the following way:

  • All siblings of current LGCS students will be offered a seat for September 2013in advance of the lottery.
  • On Lottery Day, we will conduct the drawing to offer seats to new applicants. Each applicant will be assigned a lottery placement number, in the order that their names are drawn.

Each lottery card has the following information written on it:

lottery

As seen above, the card shows the child’s first and last name, an application # (which is a number that we assigned to each application) and a space for entering the applicant’s lottery number. Immediately after each card is drawn, an LGCS staff member will write the lottery placement number into the box and the card will then be placed into our official lottery binder.

Following the Lottery

Each applicant will be informed of the lottery number assigned to his or her application by standard letter and by e-mail, if an e-mail address had been provided. The letter will also tell you if the applicant has been accepted to LGCS or is being put on the Wait List. Letters containing this information will be sent to families within 72 hours of the lottery.

All admitted students must provide proof of residency no later than May 1, 2013. If this information is not provided by May 1st, your seat will be released to the next student on the Wait List. Acceptable proof of residency includes:

Volunteer

Parent volunteers play an important role at LGCS.

The main vehicle for volunteering is the LGCS Parent Association, which organizes the school's book fair, and events for students. Each classroom has at least one class parent who helps arrange for parents to volunteer in the classroom, reading to students, or assisting teachers and aides. Parents with a particular expertise can talk with students about their specialties. They can also serve as chaperones on the weekly field-study trips to educational sites in Brooklyn.
